Facebook vs Instagram — Which Is Better for Your Business?

Every small business owner eventually asks the same question — should I focus on Facebook or Instagram? Both platforms are owned by Meta, both have massive audiences, and both can drive real business results. But they're very different in how they work, who uses them, and what kind of content performs best.

Here's how to think about it so you can stop splitting your energy and start putting it where it actually matters for your specific business.

Who's Actually on Each Platform?

This is the most important factor and the one most businesses overlook. The platform doesn't matter — your customer does. Start by asking where your ideal customer actually spends their time.

Facebook skews older. The majority of Facebook's most active users are 35 and up. If you're targeting homeowners, parents, business owners, or anyone in that 35-65 demographic — Facebook is where they are. Facebook is also where local community happens — neighborhood groups, buy/sell pages, local business recommendations.

Instagram skews younger and more visual. Instagram's core audience is 18-34. If you're selling something that looks good in photos — food, fashion, fitness, design, home decor, travel — Instagram is your playground. It's also where influencer marketing lives and breathes.

⚾ Quick Rule of Thumb: If your customer is a local business owner or homeowner aged 35+ — start with Facebook. If your customer is younger and your product or service is highly visual — start with Instagram. If you're not sure — do both, but create content native to each platform.

What Kind of Content Works on Each?

This is where a lot of businesses go wrong. They create one piece of content and post it identically on both platforms. The problem is that what works on Facebook often falls flat on Instagram and vice versa.

Facebook rewards conversation and community. Longer posts that tell a story, ask a question, or share useful information tend to perform well. Links to blog posts, articles, and your website work on Facebook in a way they don't on Instagram. Local content — mentioning your city, tagging local places, joining local conversations — gets tremendous organic reach on Facebook.

Instagram rewards visual quality and consistency. Short punchy captions, high quality images or video, Reels, and Stories are what drive growth. Links don't work in posts — you drive traffic through your bio link or Stories. Hashtags and location tags help new people discover you.

Paid Advertising — Which Gets Better Results?

Both platforms use the same Meta Ads Manager, so you can actually run ads on both simultaneously with the same campaign. But if you're choosing one to start with:

⚾ The Smart Move: Start with Facebook ads targeting your local area. Once you have a campaign that's converting, duplicate it to Instagram and test. Let the data tell you where your customers are responding — don't assume.

Organic vs Paid — What Should You Do First?

Before you spend a dollar on ads, make sure your organic presence is solid. A Facebook Business Page with no posts, no reviews, and no profile photo makes your paid ads less effective because people click through and see nothing credible.

Spend 30 days building your organic presence first — post 3 times a week, respond to every comment, get your first handful of reviews — before turning on paid ads. That foundation makes everything else work better.

The Bottom Line

For most local service businesses — including marketing consultants, contractors, healthcare providers, and professional services — Facebook should be your primary platform and Instagram your secondary. For businesses with highly visual products or younger target markets, flip that order.

The best answer is always the one based on where your specific customers actually are. And if you're not sure — that's exactly the kind of question we help answer at Home Run Consulting.
